Kenyan football fraternity mourns death of Kakamega Homeboyz midfielder Silas Abung’ana

The Kenyan Premier League fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the death of Silas Abung’ana, a midfielder with Kakamega Homeboyz, who passed away while receiving treatment at Kakamega County General Hospital.

According to reports, Abung’ana died after sustaining serious head injuries following an alleged attack linked to a family dispute.

The incident is said to have involved his younger brother, who allegedly stabbed him during a confrontation over wife-related issues.

Family members had reportedly urged the player to separate from his wife, whom they viewed as an unsuitable match, a disagreement that is believed to have escalated into violence.

In a statement released on Thursday, February 5, Kakamega Homeboyz confirmed that the player succumbed to head injuries sustained during the attack. The club said Abung’ana passed away just before midnight on Wednesday, February 4, while undergoing treatment at Kakamega County General Hospital.

Kakamega Homeboyz Football Club is deeply devastated by the untimely demise of Silas Abung’ana,” the club said, confirming the loss of the midfielder who had featured in only 10 matches since joining the team.

Abung’ana had signed for Kakamega Homeboyz from Gucha FC and was beginning to establish himself at the club. The tragic incident reportedly occurred on the night of Tuesday, February 3, just days after he featured in a Premier League match against Mara Sugar FC.

“During this incredibly difficult time, we respectfully request privacy for Silas’ family, teammates, friends, and club officials as we come to terms with this unimaginable loss,” the club added.

Following the news of his death, fans, fellow players, and football stakeholders took to social media to express their condolences, remembering Abung’ana for his commitment, talent, and growing contribution to Kenyan football.

By the time of publication, the Football Kenya Federation had not yet issued an official statement on the passing of the Kakamega Homeboyz midfielder. Kakamega Homeboyz currently sit sixth on the FKF Premier League table.

Abung’ana’s death marks a tragic loss to his family, club, and the wider football community, once again highlighting the devastating consequences of domestic disputes and violence.
